The forgotten past

Everyone wants to be remembered and everyone searches for some kind of meaning to their existence, and a large part of that meaning come from what  you have done in the past- your history. That is why I feel that  UNESCO World Heritage is an important organisation to be a part of. This program  is basically a catalog of sites that are considered to be of cultural or natural importance to humanity, which could by the UK  has only 28 and the USA only 21.

The country with the most UNESCO world heritage sites is not surprising, it's Italy with a whopping 49 sites. China has 45, Spain 44, France and Germany have 38. It is important to preserve the past, that is how we learn from our mistakes after all. Now it comes as no surprise that the UK has so little, it just goes to show where their priorities lie! They don't care beauty, knowledge or culture unless you can make a lot of money from it straight away. What legacy are we leaving behind for the future?? A whole bunch of debt!

UNESCO is all about the about preserving such things like forest, mountains, lakes, islands, deserts, monuments, buildings and even whole cities like the city of Verona in Italy or Venice that is also in Italy for the common heritage of humanity. You may be wondering why things like mountains or forests are on this list, they are at threat from corporations who would want to blow the tops of mountains to get to the minerals, and the very real threat of deforestation.

Some people are just so short sighted and selfish that all they think about is how much money they can make in their lifetime, they don't spare a thought for future generations- that's why we should be grateful to UNESCO for helping to preserve what really matters.
